Identification The seven species of peacock pheasant get their name because male display to their hens like peacocks. The mountain peacock pheasant was formerly known as Rothschild's peacock pheasant, after Baron Lionel Walter Rothchild; one of the founders of the Natural History Museum. |

Behaviour

Distribution & Habitat These birds are critically endangered in the wild, an probably number less than 200 individuals. They can only be found in two small isolated populations, near the tops of two mountains. |

Reproduction |
The birds in our Tropical House are on loan from the Malaysian Government and are part of an international breeding programme run in conjunction with the World Pheasant Association and the Bronx Zoo. |
Conservation The Malaysian Wildlife Department established an international conservation breeding colony with the World Pheasant Association to try and ensure the continued survival of this species. A number of birds that have been bred in the UK have recently been returned to the wild to bolster the population in their home country. |
