Diet
They feed on grasses, herbs and other plants.

Identification
Mara are rodents belonging to the family Cavidae. They are related to the Guinea pigs and are also known as Patagonian cavy. Their brown fur changes to a distinctive creamy-white rump and has lighter legs and underside.

Behaviour
They live in groups of up to 15 members but will congregate into groups of over 100 to feed.
They can run at speeds of up to 30mph.


Reproduction The maras gestation period (or pregnancy) is 90 days.
A female will give birth to a maximum of three pups, who will be weaned at two months.
