Total length: 100cms

Identification

Long and dense fur, reddish-brown in colour. Males have bare skin patches around the eyes that distinguish them from females, who's fur is a more creamy colour on the underside.

Diet

Mainly fruits but also flowers and leaves.

Habitat & Distribution

Primary and secondary rainforests of eastern Madagascar.

Reproduction

Seasonal births: March in UK, September in Madagascar

Gestation: 90 days

One young born - twins rarely.

Infant carried on the mothers underside at first, then rides piggy-back style after a couple of weeks. Males may carry the infant at a later stage.

Behaviour

Arboreal (Tree dwelling)

Active: Cathemeral - active during periods of day and night.

Group Size: 2 - 6

Home range: 10 to 20 hectares

 

Conservation

Little information is available to remaining numbers, although it is sparely distributed through-out its range. It is believed it could be the most threatened of all the Eulemer species. A European Studbook is kept at Mulhouse Zoo, France for this species. They occur in Analamazaota, Ambatovaky and Tsaratanana Special Reserve, Mantady and Ranomafana National Park, Andringitra, Marojejy and Zahamena Nature Reserve.

It is on Appendix I of CITES and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN
