Body length: 400 - 550mm

Diet

Various fruits, seeds, flowers, leaves, bark, honey eggs and insects.

Identification

Are long limbed and have prehensile tails that act like a 5th limb, which makes the m extremely agile, probably second only to the gibbons of South-east Asia. Overall black in colour. Large stomachs that appear almost bloated to assist in the digestion of tough leafy matter.

Behaviour

Live in groups of 2 to 8 members, forming part of a larger band containing up to 25 monkeys. Diurnal or day-time active, spend much of the day searching for food.

 

Distribution & Habitat

Found in the remaining primary rainforests of Colombia.

Reproduction

Gestation: 230 days. Single infant Sexual maturity: 4 - 5 years Weaned at 7 -8 months old.

Conservation

Endangered species. A European Breeding Programme (EEP) is in place to help maintain and conserve the small captive population.
